How do mosquito bites swell?

A few days ago, I was mindlessly scratching a mosquito bite, when I noticed it was all swelled up. I started wondering, "Oh gee, what is up with this bump? Is it like filled with air or pus, or what?" I already know that it's swelling because of chemicals in the mosquito's saliva, but how do the chemicals "inflate" your skin????
